  • As a subcontractor to Abt Associates, EI won a seat on an IDIQ contract for CDC’s Division of Healthcare Quality and Promotion entitled “Safety and Healthcare Epidemiology Prevention Research Development (SHEPERD).”  The vehicle will fund research to facilitate development of innovative strategies for detection and prevention of hospital acquired infections.

  • Multiple EI scientists attend the 23rd International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) Annual Conference in Barcelona, Spain.
  • EI President and Founder, Dr. Shira Kramer, co-chairs a symposium and interactive discussion of the newly-revised draft ISEE ethics guidelines.
  • EI Director Mrs. Stephanie Moller Hikel presents a talk entitled "Increased risk of childhood leukemia in communities impacted by hydraulic fracturing in the Marcellus Shale."

Soskolne entitled "Canada's Sydney Tar Ponds: Conflicting Interests Resulting in a Case of Suppression Bias and Social Injustices?" in the 2011 book "Globalisation and Ecological Integrity in Science and International Law", edited by Westra, Bosselmann and Soskolne.

  • Multiple EI scientists attend the 3rd North American Congress of Epidemiology (NACE) in Montreal, Quebec.
  • EI President and Founder, Dr. Shira Kramer, presents a talk entitled "Refusing to look and failing to find: Case studies in the systematic strategy to hide occupational and environmental exposure risks" as part of the symposium "Epidemiologists as expert witnesses: Exposing the influence of biased epidemiological assessments in tort actions and consequences for public health."
  • EI Director Mrs. Stephanie Moller Hikel presents a poster entitled "Previously unreported risks of birth defects and childhood neoplasms in a cohort of semiconductor workers."
  • EI scientist Mr. David Hinds presents a poster entitled "Paroxetine and cardiac birth defects: a causal role."

  • EI is one of four prime contractors recently awarded an IDIQ contract with CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) entitled "Technical Support for Epidemiologic and Exposure Assessment Studies" in support of the NIOSH Division of Surveillance, Hazard Evaluations, and Field Studies.
  • The aims of this contract are to provide technical support in activities related to conducting epidemiologic and exposure assessment studies, including feasibility studies, and the development and maintenance of occupational health surveillance systems.

  • EI attends the Johns Hopkins 27th Annual Public Health Career Fair with over 400 people in attendance. EI interviews over 50 candidates for its Research Associate, Epidemiologist I and Senior Scientist positions.

  • EI becomes a subcontractor to Total Solutions on the CDC-Wide CIMS IDIQ contract in the 8a Management Consulting domain.  The major service areas funded through this domain include: business analysis; performance management; process improvement; business process reengineering; decision support and analytics; program vulnerability and risk assessment; continuity of operations planning; project and program management; strategic planning; organizational study and design; transformation and change management; human capital and workforce analysis; training; and communications.

  • As a subcontractor to Abt Associates, EI has won a seat on an IDIQ contract at the National Cancer Institute entitled “Surveillance Support Services for NCI.”  This funding vehicle will aim to monitor and explain patterns in the national cancer burden, including trends in cancer incidence, mortality, survival, risk factors, and the delivery of preventive and therapeutic health services.

  • Dr. Shira Kramer co-chairs ethics sessions at International Society for Environmental Epidemiology in Dublin, Ireland.

  • Dr. Shira Kramer speaks at the House Triangle on Capitol Hill at a press conference supporting proposed legislation banning the open pit burning of solid and liquid wastes on U.S. military bases in Iraq and Afghanistan. The legislation, HR 2419, prohibits burn pits on new bases that military officials know will exist for more than six months. It also calls for tracking all troops exposed to the black plumes that come from the pits. Dr. Kramer discusses the numerous adverse health effects associated with many of the by-products of open waste burning, and advocates for the soldiers and contractors exposed to these 'burn pits.' Since this press conference, the key provisions of HR 2419 are incorporated in the National Defense Authorization Act.
